About The Project:
Imaging of biological samples are crucial to studying effects of native environmental conditions on the samples. Conventional microscopes are bulky, costly and are significantly complex to use which limits their applications to resource poor settings. Hence, it is extremely challenging that we could send a microscope to image biological samples on moon.
In this project, we come up with a solution to the above problem. We design and demonstrate a cellphone based microscopy platform, that consists of minimal components, is extremely light weight and inexpensive. The sample can be integrated inside the microscopy setup itself. Performance of the microscope has been tested by imaging different types of biological specimens. It is found that the designed microscope provides sufficient magnification and resolution required to image micro particles and cells, and is comparable to a standard microscope.
